Mitigating the risks of indirect land use change (ILUC) related deforestation from industrial palm oil expansion by sharing land access with displaced crop and cattle farmers

چکیده

The European Commission (EC) is critical of palm oil production as it has a high indirect land-use change (ILUC) risk from industrial expansion pressuring landless/displaced farmers to clear tropical forests. Major oil-producing countries such Indonesia and Malaysia are claiming that the EC’s decision will cause unwarranted obstacles adoption sustainable practices in industry obstruct free trade. To date, responding EC, both have yet develop national strategy mitigates risks ILUC caused by expansion. Hence, we propose these major reform their land policy making compulsory for plantation companies share with farmers. This could prevent clearing more tracts forest encourage them use immature mature areas stands crop cattle farming, respectively. guide this strategy, performed Monte Carlo simulations predict area then estimate which be allocated farming at global-, country-, plantation-scales. Besides mitigating further deforestation tropics, livestock integration can boost food security reduce chemical herbicides countries. consistent certification schemes terms ensuring social environmental sustainability. Palm should implement address while consumer demand producers strategy.

Deforestation, land-use change and REDD

Unasylva 230, Vol. 59, 2008 The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fourth assessment report (IPCC, 2007) estimated that the forest sector contributes 17.4 percent of all greenhouse gases from anthropogenic sources; most of this is due to deforestation and forest degradation. The Stern Review on the economics of climate change (Stern, 2007), furthermore, observed that “curbing deforesta...

Palm oil plantation waste handling by smallholder and the correlation with the land fire

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: From August to October 2019, several provinces in Sumatra and Kalimantan had faced severe forest fires, causing thousands of citizens to suffer respiratory disorders. This study aims to assess waste handling in palm oil plantation manage by smallholders and the correlation palm oil plantation waste handling with the fireland in Sumatera, especially on...

Committed carbon emissions, deforestation, and community land conversion from oil palm plantation expansion in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Industrial agricultural plantations are a rapidly increasing yet largely unmeasured source of tropical land cover change. Here, we evaluate impacts of oil palm plantation development on land cover, carbon flux, and agrarian community lands in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. With a spatially explicit land change/carbon bookkeeping model, parameterized using high-resolution satellite time ser...

Sensitivity of Carbon Emission Estimates from Indirect Land-Use Change

We analyze the sensitivity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from land-use change to modifications in assumptions concerning crop area, yield, and deforestation. For this purpose, we run a modified version of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) Agricultural Outlook Model, which was used previously to assess the impacts of energy price increases and biofuel policy changes on...
